Live Music

Columbia Station:
2325 18th St NW, Washington  20009 • 202-462-6040

Description: ADAMS-MORGAN. Columbia Station sponsors live jazz concerts every night of the week. If you expect to get a good seat, though, you have to show up early. While you wait, look over the unusual artwork on the walls. Around 10pm, the show begins, and the room floods with local jazz music. Terrific performances! Dress is casual to business casual but nothing too fancy.
METRO: Woodley Park/Zoo or Dupont Circle

Blues Alley:
1073 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington  20007 • 202-337-4141

Description: Although this club may be a little pricey for some, it presents top-name jazz artists in an intimate setting. A roster of past performers includes Dizzy Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis. While you groove to the rhythms, take advantage of their great Creole dinners, or enjoy a well-mixed cocktail. A great place for jazz-lovers.
METRO: Foggy Bottom/GWU

Habana Village:
1834 Columbia Rd NW, Washington  20009 • 202-462-6310

Description: ADAMS-MORGAN. This four-story club can add a little spice to your life with dance lessons and great live music. You aren't likely to be off your feet much here – you'll find yourself doing the salsa, tango, merengue and samba before you know it. The house specialty drink is the mojito, a powerful mix of rum, sugar and crushed mint leaves. If you need to take a break from dancing, there are cozy lounges on the third and fourth floors. METRO: Dupont Circle

Black Cat:
1831 14th St NW, Washington  20009 • 202-667-7960 • 202-667-4490

Description: U STREET. The Black Cat is a rocking, post-funk bar co-owned by the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl. The stage is always alive with alternative music, and the bar prices are decent. The bar menu includes mostly vegetarian dishes. The separate bar next door has no cover charge, some great drinks, a few pool tables, and a jukebox.
METRO: U Street/Cardoza

Madam's Organ:
2461 18th St NW, Washington  20009 • 202-667-5370

Description: ADAMS-MORGAN. Madam's Organ will definitely provide you with an interesting night out! All patrons attempt to squeeze onto the tiny dance floor and enjoy the blues, R&B and bluegrass music you will find here. There are pool tables, too, if you are up for some competition. One fair warning: this party can get kind of wild for, as the motto goes, this is where the "beautiful people come to get ugly." If you dare, check out Madam's 2nd floor bar, Big Daddy's Love Lounge and Pick-up Joint.
METRO: Woodley Park/Zoo

U-topia:
1418 U St NW, Washington  20009 • 202-483-7669

Description: U STREET. U-topia offers a little bit of everything, pleasing just about everyone. The focus here is on the arts, so you may find poetry one night and live jazz the next. The menu, full of international favorites, is superb, and there's always jazz and blues playing in the background, if not live on stage. The bar crowd is electric, and all are welcome.
METRO: U Street/Cardoza

Bohemian Caverns:
2001 Eleventh Street NW, Washington  20001 • 202-299-0801

Description: DOWNTOWN. A classy dining room, accented with dark wood, elegant chandeliers, a piano and a fireplace, greets guests at Bohemian caverns. Menu items include the "Miles Davis" (lamb kabobs on saffron rice), the "Charlie Parker" (linguine with crabmeat, shrimp, scallions and Roma tomatoes) and other Mediterranean-inspired dishes. After dinner, descend into the legendary Club Caverns, a below-ground concert venue adorned in geologically themed décor, for the main event. If jazz isn't your thing, then check out Club 2001, the upstairs lounge, where DJs spin a wider variety of tunes.
